An Architectural Association Visiting School
Tropical: of, typical of, or peculiar to the tropics; ity: denoting an instance or degree of a quality or condition
Tropicality is a nomadic research that studies new waves of socio-economic and political colonization through lived experiences of private life, the material cultures and dimensions of the everyday and contested ideas about privacy, work, gender identity, family and at its core the process of subject formation. We are methodologically promiscuous, and build our own critique of domesticity through architectural theory, post-Marxist Feminist theory, Critical Theory and Political Philosophy.
The project of Tropicality takes form through the use of sound and moving image in the format of short films, through drawings and short pieces of writing.
The now five year old project, takes place every summer along the region described between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. In our previous years we have focused on a series of cities: San Jose, Costa Rica, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Colombo, Sri Lanka and Nara, Okinawa. We will now enter the heart of the rainforest in our next series jungles.
